Yet another winter in Minnesota has come and gone. We are now anxiously anticipating the growth of new leaves on the trees, the greening of the grass, fresh breezes warm enough to throw open the windows, and the pop-up flower marts which appear in parking lots across the Twin Cities. Although for the most-part I enjoy winter in Minnesota, I do spend quite a bit of time between February and May planning out our Spring/Summer projects. I’ve gone through several drafts of vegetable garden layouts, plans for mulched beds, areas of the yard I want to focus on, and have re-prioritized these lists several times. However, now that May is here, it is time to put all of the research and plans into action.
During the first two weeks of May, I have been focusing on putting my plans onto paper. An architect and a landscape designer I am not, but I think my sketches are good enough to allow the professionals to come in and finalize the plans. Here is the draft we are starting from:
To recap the plans, we are looking to remove a failing pine tree from our yard, install a triangle-shaped pergola in the corner, lay down a natural stone patio, and install mulched beds around the perimeter of the fence. I’m gathering ideas for perennials for the beds, and am also looking to plant a tree just outside of the fence that I will be able to see from my kitchen window.
As you can see, Jeff & I have decided to work within the fenced-in area. It would probably make more sense to focus on the area outside of the fence that our neighbors and anyone driving by will see (i.e. the “curb appeal” areas); however, we feel focusing on the area we spend the most time in will bring us more satisfaction in the end. Top priority of the year is to paint the house and fence. Once we pay for that enormous project, we will re-consider our budget and start in on the landscaping. It may take several years to complete, but we now have something to work towards.
